A message from Dr. Scott
This has been a very challenging week for the students, staff, and faculty at JB Watkins due to the loss of a 3rd grade student, Joseph Armstead. This loss impacts every aspect of the functioning of a school; however, as a loving and caring school community, we have begun to heal. As stated in a letter to you dated, Tuesday 5th, CCPS dispatched specialists along with our own guidance counselors who were available to all of our grieving students and staff members. The support was incredible! We continue to receive many wonderful suggestions for support of the family as well as ways to honor Joe's memory through our PTA as well as our school's leadership team. Feel free to contact our school's guidance counselor, Mrs. Sarah Spencer or our PTA president, Mrs. Angela Castillo with suggestions or concerns. Thanks for your unbelievable expressions of support and good wishes. Look forward to receiving fliers regarding school wide efforts.
The PTA would like to help the Armstead Family
We are all so very sad about the loss of our Watkins 3rd grader Joe Armstead. On behalf of the PTA, our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Armstead family and to all of their friends.
The PTA would like to try to help the Armstead family, and we are starting a collection to help the family. If you would like to contribute money, gift cards, or anything else to benefit the family, please send it in to Watkins in an envelope, marked "PTA-Armstead Family." Checks can be made out to the "JB Watkins PTA". Our next PTA meeting is January 12th, at 7pm. Donations can also be brought to the PTA meeting.
Our next BINGO night will be on January 29th, and all proceeds from that night will go to the Armstead family. BINGO forms will be going home in the near future, and donations can also be sent in with the form.
The PTA will also be donating money to help purchase a piece of playground equipment to honor Joe.
Thank you to everyone that has offered their ideas and support. It is appreciated. Thank you also to everyone that has made or will make a donation to the Armstead family.
Thank you for your assistance,
Angela Castillo

Green Tip:
Watkins card front recycling is back! Every year we all get a hundred greeting cards for special occasions. Have you ever thought "What do I do with all of these cards"? St. Jude's Ranch for Children www.stjuderanch.org has a solution, they collect card fronts from all types of cards and make them into new cards. The children add a new recycled paper back to the card front and then they sell the cards to help support the work done at the ranch. We will be collecting card fronts again this year until the end of January. So, if you have any kind of cards, holiday, birthday, get well, or any other greeting cards you don't need. Take off the card front and send it in to your child's teacher addressed to the green team. Last year, we collected 1,013 cards, let's beat that this year. It's a great way of recycling!
Don't forget to recycle your Christmas tree! Chesterfield County has two locations accepting trees for recycling until January 31 and after that it will be an $8 fee. One location for the recycling is the Northern Area Convenience Center at 3200 Warboro Road. The other is the Southern Area Convenience Center at 6700 Landfill Drive. All decorations have to be removed and no artificial trees are accepted. Find a neighbor with a trailer and make it a neighborhood event to get all your trees recycled. Don't forget when you go to the Center that they collect all types of recycling: TV's, computers, printers, scanners, VCR's, DVD's and compact fluorescent bulbs.
